America, land of the free-brave, Part 2

My trip! It continues.

Late in my trip to New York I met up with the lovely Jill Pantozzi from The Nerdy Bird who I met for the first time when she was a guest of honor at Contact Convention in Brisbane earlier this year.

We talked work and tattoos and some feminism and nerdery and I hope to see her again when I’m next in NYC.

From New York we caught the train to Raleigh, North Carolina. It was a nine hour journey and though I managed it pretty well, my fella was less amused by the trip. We got a sleeper cabin and it came with THIS:

THAT IS A TOILET FOUR INCHES FROM COREY’S SEAT, SUFFICE TO SAY WE DIDN’T USE IT.

Raleigh was a nice, relaxing time with a good friend. We mostly just ate and drank a lot of cider, but we also visited the North Carolina Museum of Art, which has an amazing collection, and headed over to Durham for the day. We also went to an amazing bar, and were made cocktails by an extremely intuitive bartender at The Empress Room.

Finally, New Orleans, where I am typing this, still drying my sweat after a morning/afternoon outside and with a 32 ounce frozen daiquiri from Daiquiris in my freezer. New Orleans is amazing, old and weird and varied. And hot. Everyone here is so friendly – that Southern Hospitality thing. I spent hours roaming the French Quarter by myself, walking down the streets I’ve read about in books for so many years.

We caught some rad jazz bands at The Spotted Cat Music Club:

And have drank and eaten so, so much amazing food and drink.

SHRIMP AND GRITS!

It’s rained a lot here. Right now parts of Louisiana are experiencing the worst floods in history. You can help here.

Now it’s on to Worldcon – we leave tomorrow for Kansas City!
